Workshops

Pre-Conference Workshops: 18th January 2010

12:00 - 15:00 Workshop A: Managing Data Volume And Data Complexity From Next-Generation Sequencing

With NGS technology evolving and costs lower, the application of NGS becomes wider for de-novo sequencing, genotyping, comparative genomics and clinical diagnostics. This in turn results in a greater number of projects, users and their significant data management challenges. During this workshop, participants will examine the key considerations and challenges of handling the volume and complexity of NGS data, including:

  • Software and infrastructure needed
  • Strategies for data storage, quality control and back up
  • Methods for archiving and managing lifecycle of data
  • Assembling sequences
  • Functional annotations

15:15 - 18:15 Workshop B: Comparing High-Throughput Gene Analysis Systems: Conventional Microarray Technology Vs. NGS Systems

Next Gen platforms are improving rapidly and therefore reducing cost of the systems, yet routine sequencing of whole genomes is still often too expensive. However, miniaturised and parallelised platforms allow a lower sample and template consumption and increase throughput over Sanger systems while continuing to reduce costs. This specialist discussion will give participants the opportunity to discuss different sequencers in practice and the progress in key application areas. Practitioners will also share experiences on how next-generation systems are starting to impinge on DNA microarray usage and examples of justifying new technology. Discussions will help participants decide which technology is most appropriate

for certain projects. Join this workshop to explore today's sequencing technologies and how they are being used. Please go to www.dnaevent.com for additional workshop details
